I have been fishing ever since my early childhood. My father and grandfather would take me out on the
piers that line Lake Michigan to fish for Steelhead and Perch as well as in the lakes that pepper the
landscape of the mitten state.
I started fly fishing in my late mid 20s and have been tying flies for around 10 years. I started tying
classic salmon flies around 8 years ago. Like every person who has ever seen the little works of art that
we throw for fish I was completely enamored by the intricacies of them. So, slowly but surely, I started
learning the basics of the patterns, rushed to the most complex pattern that I could find, and then
realized I was over my head.
With the help of friends and reading the source materials of the time I have been able to make a bit of
progress when it comes to achieving a historically accurate fly. As I have learned the basics, I have also
branched out into tying some freestyle and artistic flies as a creative outlet. When I do these types of
flies, I like to go big. It is fun to explorer the combinations of feathers, colors, and tinsels that go into
creating artistic flies.
