Sylvie Malo-Clark was born in the Canadian province of Quebec. In 1977 she set out in her orange VW Beetle to Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada to learn English at St. Thomas University. It was then that she met her husband Peter and was introduced to the sport of fly fishing. Little did she know she was to embark on a journey that changed her life. She quickly learned English, made the Nashwaak river her home and became very passionate about fly fishing. She spends considerable time angling for the Atlantic salmon mainly on the Miramichi, Cains, Restigouche and Gaspé rivers.
She specializes in hairwing Atlantic Salmon flies and her journey has also taken her into tying the classics. Her flies, paintings and fishing adventures have been featured in magazines as well as books. Her birds eye maple art fly boxes, a watercolour combined with Atlantic salmon flies, are sought after by discriminating collectors.
In 2011-12 she was part of the exhibit “A Graceful Rise Women in Fly Fishing Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow” at the American Museum of Fly Fishing (AMFF) in Manchester, Vermont. This wonderful exhibit was very significant as it opened up many opportunities. You can read more about Sylvie in the Winter 2018 edition of the AMFF journal ‘The catch of a Lifetime ‘.
She is a Miramichi Salmon Association (MSA) member as well as a Atlantic Salmon Federation (ASF) member where she was featured in the winter 2016 journal edition ‘ Sylvie’s Grand Slam’. She occasionally donates flies to both organizations for their fund-raising efforts.
Sylvie has served on the board of directors of the International Women Fly Fishers organization where she wrote many articles. She is part of the Regal Vise Pro Staff and an Ahrex hooks ambassador.
Most of all she enjoys sharing her love of fly fishing and making connections with anglers all around the world. In November 2023 she will be inducted in the NB Atlantic Salmon Hall of Fame. A great honour!
