My name is Frank G. Swarner III and I started fly fishing around 8 years of age and began tying flies soon after. Trout fishing grabbed my attention as a young fly fisher and now I love to chase Salmon and Steelhead as well as any other fish that take flies in fresh and saltwater.
I reside in Downingtown, PA where I am President of the Brandywine Trout and Conservation Club which is a co-op hatchery for the Pennnsylvania Fish and Boat Commission.
I am a licensed New York State Fishing Guide and am on the Deer Creek Pro Team as well as being on the The Flymen Fishing Company associates program.
My interest in Salmon flies began in 2002 when I began learning how to spey cast with a single hand rod before purchasing a spey rod in 2004. During that period I became intrigued with Married Wing Salmon Flies as well as Spey and Dee Flies. I started tying Spey and Dee Flies for Steelhead fishing as well as for show, and learned a lot in the process.
In 2006 John McLain invited me to join himself, Matt Inman, and Roger Plourde for a fishing and fly tying weekend at Paul Rossman’s Bed and Breakfast in Connecticut. It was at this location where I tied my first Married Wing Salmon Fly which was a Red Rover. Roger taught me how to marry the Turkey slips and I watched Paul, John, and Matt mount their wing before I took a shot at it myself. The Red Rover turned out ok and I caught a 22” Farmington River Brown Trout the day before so it was an amazing weekend!!
I have been featured in the first edition of Charlie Mecks book, “Pennsylvania’s Trout Streams and their Hatches,” as well as Michael Radencinch’s book, “Classic Salmon Fly Patterns.” I was also involved with Sarah Briston’s, “Autumns on the Spey” painting project.
I would like to thank the ASFI Committee for inviting me to tie flies at this amazing event. I am looking forward to making new friends as well as seeing old friends and fishing buddies!!
