My name is Daniel Zbylut. I come from Calgary, Alberta,Canada. I started fly tying when I was 9. I was intrigued by all the colourful feathers and materials I saw when I visited a fly shop. This sparked my interest, and I started tying flies on a homemade vise constructed from pliers.
Aside from traditional salmon flies I tie trout flies for the Bow River and a few mountain streams in my area. I am now in finished my first year of university but in the summer, I work for Fish Tales, Calgary’s friendliest fly shop and have also joined their team of guides doing float trips on the Bow River. In 2015 I met Colin Callbeck at the Western Canadian Fly- Fishing Exposition. He has become my mentor, and I learned
a lot about fly tying from him.
I attended my first ASFI in 2018 soon after I got interested in tying classic flies. I briefly tied some freestyle flies but traditional patterns especially from William Blacker have become my favorite to replicate. Some
of my favorites are the Blacker Shannon flies, the Ghost flies, and the Black Argus. I plan on tying that last one mentioned at the event after hanging on to the feathers for quite some time now. I look forward to attending the Atlantic Salmon Fly International for a second time. I am extremely excited for this event!
I hope to see my friends from the last ASFI again and meet all the new ones who I have made through Facebook.
See you there everyone!!
