My name is Aaron Miller, and I've been tying flies since I was 11 years old.
As a birthday gift my parents got me a fly tying kit, like so many others. The materials and instructions weren't great, but I fell in love instantly. I struggled through basic trout flies for months until my local fly shop held a free introductory lesson to fly tying. I learned all about thread control and basic tying techniques, which set me going on my fly tying path.
Fast forward a couple of years, and I was tying my first salmon fly. I can't remember where I learned about salmon flies first, but I was soon putting all of my effort into figuring them out. I had a hard time figuring out the basics for a year or two, but eventually settled into trying to tie with more traditional techniques and style, which I continue to do. The help of the classicflytying.net community has helped me immensely, and I wouldn't be where I am now without the help of Robert Verkerk, Anthony Smith, and numerous others.
As a young salmon fly tyer, I may lack some experience, but I try to make up for it with enthusiasm. I love nothing more than tying a spey, dee, grub, or fully dressed fly, and I'll gladly spend hours looking at pictures of antique originals.
I've still got a lot to learn but I learn with every fly and I'm thrilled with the progress I reach. It's truly an honor to tie at the ASFI, and I look forward to meeting you all.
